Social behaviors of Cotton-top Tamarin Monkeys
There are many different social behaviors that the cotton-top tamarin exhibits. Particularly, communities establish a distinct hierarchy of dominance where only dominant pairings reproduce. Normal twin births are the norm, and the female employs pheromones to stop other females in the community from reproducing.

Distribution of Cotton-top Tamarin monkeys
Before 1976, when CITES accorded cotton-top tamarins the highest level of protection and outlawed all international trade, it is estimated that up to 40,000 of them were captured and exported for use in biomedical research.
The lowland forest in northwest Colombia where the cotton-top tamarin is found has been reduced to 5% of its former size, putting the species in danger owing to widespread habitat degradation. With only 6,000 individuals remaining in the wild, it is one of the rarest primates in the world and is officially categorized as critically endangered.
