A New World monkey is the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus). It was previously found in the states of Piaui, Paraiba, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco, Alagoas, and Bahia on Brazil’s northeastern coast.

Since the 1920s, it has spread its range to Southeast Brazil through the intentional and unintentional release of captive individuals (its first recorded sighting in the wild occurred in Rio de Janeiro in 1929). As a result, it has become an invasive species there, raising concerns about genetic contamination of nearby species like the buffy-tufted marmoset (Callithrix aurita) and predation on bird nestlings and eggs.

Special features of Common Marmoset monkeys

The little monkeys are distinguished by their long gray-black ringed tail and the white tufts on their ears in addition to their little body size. The forehead has a white patch, and the face is brilliantly colored with thin hair.

They have claw-like nails on their fingers and toes, just like all other members of the family of monkeys to which the common marmosets belong. The big toe is the only one with the classic primate flat nail. They can literally “hook” onto tree bark with their claws, and unlike other primates, they are able to climb vertically up and down trees.

Diet of the common marmoset monkeys

Plant exudates and tree gums are the principal foods consumed by common marmosets. During the dry season, these foods make up 80% of their whole diet. The common marmoset’s group size and chances of survival depend on the availability of tree gums.

Because of their unique eating preferences, they may live in smaller spaces, which lessens competition with other ape species. The common marmosets can access tree sap thanks to a unique set of teeth. They have incisors that are larger and more chisel-like, with strengthened enamel on the outside.

The “cutting edges” are constantly being sharpened due to the uneven wear and tear of dental enamel and dentine.
