The Caracal, sometimes called the “desert lynx,” does not truly have the same physical characteristics as other members of the lynx family, such as the distinctive facial hair ruff.

Instead, it has a short, dense coat that ranges in color from tawny-brown to brick-red, with reports of black (melanistic) individuals. As suggested by the name, the backs of the ears are black and are covered in 1.75-inch-long black tufts.

The tuft is the feature that distinguishes caracals from other lynx species. It is the biggest and most dangerous of Africa’s tiny cats. Males can weigh up to 40 pounds, while females can reach up to 35 pounds. They are 35-39 inches long and stand between 16 and 20 inches tall at the shoulders.

Habitat: Caracals prefer the more overgrown, arid settings and reside in the drier savannah and forest regions of sub-Saharan Africa. In contrast to tropical rain forests, they live in evergreen and montane forests.

Distribution: Southwest Asia, the Middle East, South Africa, West Africa, and Central Africa.

Reproduction and gestation:  Females give birth to a litter of 1–4 kittens, with 2 being the norm, after a gestation period of roughly 78–81 days. On the first day of life, they start to open their eyes, but it takes another 6 to 10 days for them to fully do so.

At 10 weeks, they are weaned, and they can stay with their moms for up to a year. They mature sexually between 12 and 16 months. Caracals have a maximum lifespan of 19 years in captivity.

Social System and Communication: With the exception of moms with young, caracals are solitary creatures with few social interactions outside of breeding season. Hear our growls, purrs, hisses, snarls, and calls.

Hunting and Diet: Caracals hunt a range of species, although their main prey items are rodents, hares, hyraxes, and small antelope. Caracals will not think twice to kill prey that is bigger than themselves, like an adult springbok or a young Kudu, unlike the other small African cats.

Similar to how leopards keep their carcasses in trees, caracals have occasionally been observed doing the same (albeit this is more of an exception than a norm). Although they have been seen during the day in protected places, these cats are primarily nocturnal.
